Vintage linen and hemp
My fascination with vintage textiles particularly vintage linen and hemp came from travels in Transylvania where there are strong traditions of folk crafts particulalrly the weaving and decorating of textiles such as linen and hemp. The cultivation and preparation of hemp was a lengthy process, afer picking it was soaked in the local lake for 3-5 weeks before being taken home to dry, it then had to be bashed to release the fibres which were then hand spun and finally woven on small looms to make clothes, sacks, house textiles etc. Hemp is beuatiful and strong, it lightens and softens with age, it is often confused with linen and it is indeed difficult to tell the difference. Vintage linen and hemp are fantastic textiles, the home loomed texture adds great character and these textiles really do tell a story. The women folk would spend hours decorating textiles for dowry chests and for the best room, which even though the houses were generally of a very modest sise was used only on special occasions. The bed would be piled high with intricately embroidered pillows and the walls with embroidered wall hangings featuring traditional motifs. Its odd to think that vintage linens that have been stored in barns and sheds for years are now becoming desirable. Vintage linen grain sacks which were literally used to carry grain to the mill are of the most fantastic quality vintage linen or hemp and can be used for cushions, blinds, upholstery etc.
