Transylvanian village life
Fascinating culture of transylvania, living off the land Transylvania, in Romania is a fantastic mix of splendid scenery, wild mountains, rural villages and bustling cities such as Brassov and Cluj. Rural life continues much as it did 100 years ago, athough sadly the traditions are slowly dying out it is still possible to visit villages where horse and cart is the norm , where villagers raise their own animals, cure their own meat, ferment their own cabbage juice, brew their own plum brandy, make their own cheese and spin their own wool. Picturesque houses with only outside water and toliet, hand painted folk furniture and adorned with hand painted glass fronted picture frames and hand made textiles. Where bread is made in the outside oven, pasta dried on a cloth in the sunshine and women wera traditional dress to go about their daily activities . For years under the rule of CEACEASEAU Romania was closed to outside influences and traditional Hungarian culture flourished in the villages in Transylvania which once belonged to Hungary but which were signed over to Romanina after the second world war.Transylvania is a great place to discover beautiful hand crafted textiles and women who can weave and embroider using traditional techniques. To really get away from it all and feel that you have stepped back in time, living off the land means making your food , clothes, houses and everthing else from it, skills we might all appreciate in the future as dwindling resources and environmental issues may forceall of us to reassess the way that we live and the resources that we use |
